William Ernest Hopkins

March 11, 1951 — February 28, 2026

William Ernest Hopkins, age 74, of Colfax, Iowa, passed away on February 28, 2026. He was born on March 11, 1951, in Newton, Iowa, to William Albert and Mary Jean (Guizzetti) Hopkins.

On June 30, 1971, William was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ruth Ann Martin. Together they built a life centered on hard work, family, and the simple joys that meant the most.

Throughout his life, William worked a variety of jobs. He was a skilled mechanic, equipment operator, and truck driver. He took pride in every task he undertook and was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to lend a helping hand.

William enjoyed the outdoors and the open road. He loved fishing, boating, camping, racing, and riding motorcycles. Hot rod cars held a special place in his heart, as did music and football. He was also well known for collecting treasures-items that others might have overlooked but that he saw value and history in. His collections reflected his personality: unique, interesting, and full of character.

Above all else, William cherished his family. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy. The time he spent with the little grandkids was among his happiest moments.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ann Hopkins; his children, Wendy Hopkins, Lisa Linn, William "Dusty" Hopkins, and Steven Hopkins; his grandchildren, Dylan Albright, Jauna Hopkins, Jessica Albright, Kelsey Linn, Brett Wheatcraft, William "Colton" Hopkins, Kaleb Linn, Andrew Gorman, Jared Gorman, Tanner Gorman, Joseph Hopkins, Van Hopkins, Abigail Hopkins, James Youngs, and Olivia Hopkins; and his great-grandchildren, Paisley Albright, Nova Linn, Jackson Gorman, Lainee Albright, Nash Linn, Theodore Gorman, and Jessen Gorman. He is also survived by his sister, Debra (Gary) Dunsbergen; and his siblings-in-law, Jim, Lee, Tonya, Megan, Pegi, Jeannie (Bob), Martha, and Lupe.

William was preceded in death by his parents; his grandchildren, Justin Albright and Faith Albright; his siblings, Nancy Hopkins, Ric Hopkins, David Hopkins, and Randy Hopkins; and his siblings-in-law, Dave Jr., Donnie, Ronnie (Linda), and Betsy.

William will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of engines and adventure, his one-of-a-kind collections, and most of all, his deep devotion to his family. His presence will be greatly missed and forever cherished by those who knew and loved him.
