Virgil Larsen

Virgil Eugene Larsen, 88, of Pleasant Hill, IA passed away on March 17, 2025 after an extended illness.

Virgil E. Larsen was born on June, 3, 1936, the son of Elmer and Eva (Petersen) Larsen. Virgil grew up in the Southwest Iowa area and after graduation from high school, he entered the United States Navy for 3 years.  He was stationed in San Diego, CA and his most notable time in the service took him to Asia. After the service he attended Grandview College and later got his Masters in education at the University of Northern Iowa.  He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Elmore in Ankeny, IA on July 15, 1967. Virgil was a longtime teacher at East High School in Des Moines, IA. He taught at East High for approximately 20 years. After his time at East high school, he began a 17 year career of teaching at Des Moines Area Community College where he ultimately retired in 2020. In retirement, Virgil enjoyed taking care of the acreage, or as he called it, "the ranch". He loved maintaining his property to entertain family and friends whenever they wished to come by.

Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Darald Larsen and Gary Larsen; and his sister Rebecca Saar and brother-in-law, Craig Stumme.

Virgil is survived by his loving wife: Mary Ann Larsen; children: Darin (Greg Wilkening) Larsen and Lance (Tiffany) Larsen; grandchildren: Sienna and Presley; brother: Leon (Sharron) Larsen; sister: Joy Stumme; sisters-in-law, Janet Larsen, Betty Akers and Pat Langerman; brother-in-law, Phil Saar as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to Unity Point Hospice or directed to the family for later designation.
