Timothy Bert Cunningham, 77, of Iowa, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Iowa, Tim dedicated his life to service, family, and country. After earning his GED, he joined the United States Navy at just 17 years old, serving proudly in the Seabees. He turned 18 while deployed in Vietnam, where he completed two tours of duty.
Following his time in the Navy, Tim continued his lifelong commitment to serving others by joining the Iowa Air National Guard, where he served as a fighter pilot for 28 years.
In addition to his military service, Tim devoted 33 years to the Des Moines Police Department, where he was known for his integrity, courage, and unwavering dedication to his fellow officers and community.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Tim was a man who found joy in the simple things. He loved to fly, spending time in the air whenever he could, and to go boating on the river, where he felt most at peace surrounded by family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Beatrice Cunningham; his two children, Curtis (Jill) Cunningham and Stacey (Greg) Griggs; his three sisters, Ruth, Cordy, and Susan; and seven grandchildren, who will forever cherish his strength, humor, and love. He was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Cunningham.
Tim's life was defined by service, adventure, and heart - a true example of what it means to live with purpose and honor.
