Thomas Wayne Hueholt

Feb 19, 1938 — Aug 21, 2026

Tom was a good man. He was a devoted and loving husband to Donna - creating a life of stability and order while always making room for adventure. Tom was a good dad. Always evolving and protecting. His lessons were often about the kind of people he hoped we would become. Tom's biggest love in life was Mo - a small white dog found wandering the ditches of Missouri. Mo made life very full for both Tom and Donna.

Tom was a veracious fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa State Cyclones. He was a devout Catholic and long time member of St. Theresa's Church; volunteering for the church, school and Dowling High School. Tom participated in several volunteer work missions after Hurricane Katrina...helping to repair and rebuild houses in the 9th Ward of New Orleans.

Tom was civic minded and began life as a Republican participating in state and local conventions as a delegate but switched parties as he aged. His proudest moment was helping to elect Barak Obama - spending hundreds of hours knocking on doors of central Iowa residents. He often recounted that, while he was in college, civil rights protests were happening across the South; he wanted to join but was afraid. He said often he wouldn't make that mistake again. He spent much of his spare time in later life volunteering at St. Theresa's Church and lobbying/volunteering with AARP and the Democratic Party of Iowa.

Throughout his life he loved gardening, bird watching and reading newspapers (with a special penchant for comics).

The week prior to his passing, Tom stated he was ready to leave us, allowing time to say numerous goodbyes and to make all of the "necessary arrangements."

At 88 years of age this year, he was preceded in death by his mother Juliette, step father Marvin, father Richard, and brother Richard (Dick) Hueholt.

He is survived by his wife Donna, who now resides at Ramsey Village in Des Moines; his children Christiana (Ian) Whyte - Colorado, Melissa (Warren) Mahlke - Colorado, Claire (Heather) Hueholt-Krumnow - Des Moines, and Mo; grandchildren Harrison, Luke, Jorja, Aubree, Madigan, Priscilla, and Max.

Services will be held at St. Theresa's Church in Des Moines at 11 am Saturday, August 29th. There will be a lunch afterward served by the St. Theresa Rosary and Alter Society. There will not be a visitation.

Tom did not want flowers at his funeral. If you would like to make a donation in his name, his family recommends a donation to St. Theresa's air conditioning fund. sainttheresaiowa.org; 1230 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines, iowa 50311.
