Terry Stutes

Terry Lee Stutes, 75, passed away from a heart attack due to complications of COPD on Monday Feb. 10th, 2025. He was born June 29, 1949 in Keokuk, Iowa to James Stutes and Roberta (Campbell) Stutes Thrush.

He was a 1967 graduate of Keokuk High School, where he was on the golf team. Terry developed his passion for golf when he caddied at the country club in his youth. Terry was a veteran of the Navy. Shortly after the Navy, he moved to Des Moines. He retired from Martin Marietta in West Des Moines in 2011 after 27 years of service. He married Sandie (Briggs) in 1978. Besides his love of golf, Terry enjoyed taking his kids and grandkids to his job site on the 4th of Julys where they rode the go-cart, climb the sand piles and watched fireworks. He loved a good fish fry, mushroom hunting, fishing, watching his favorite sports and picnics with his family and friends. His latest hobby was teaching his youngest son to drive.

Terry is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandie, his brothers Bob and Stacy Stutes both of Florida, sister Tracy Stutes of Pittsfield, Illinois, children Andrea(John)Fisher of Alleman, IA, Johnny (Joanna) Garner of Memphis, TN, Michelle Stutes and Kristy Stutes of Des Moines, and Keane Stutes still at home. His grandchildren Johnny, Zachary, Scotty(Caitlyn), Jacob, Michael, Noah(Alli), Julia, Bailey, E.J., Grace, Nicole, Stephanie, Kit, Keane, and  Shalan. Great-grandchildren Blake, Mila, Aubrey, Danielle.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, his step father, Woody Thrush, his granddaughter and namesake, Kaylee Gilge, brother Michael Stutes and sister Patricia Stutes.

A celebration of life will be held in June. Terry and his wife Sandie will be interned together at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery after her passing.
