Tereza "Tracey" Leonora Gavin, age 79, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on February 27, 2026.
Tracey was born on January 8, 1947. She was a caring and compassionate woman who devoted most of her working life to serving others as a Registered Nurse. Her dedication, gentle nature, and genuine concern for those in her care left a lasting impact on countless patients and their families.
In her younger years, Tracey found joy in camping and gardening, appreciating the beauty and quiet of the outdoors. Later in life, she enjoyed spending time watching movies and television and was a devoted fan of Star Wars. She especially loved playing handheld games and was known for being impressively skilled at Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, delighting her grandchildren by keeping up with them - and often winning.
Tracey had a creative spirit and loved tinkering with crafts. She had a special gift for creating beautiful flower arrangements and treasured making Christmas decorations that brought warmth and joy to her home and to those she loved.
For the past four years, Tracey spent her weekdays at the Dahl Adult Day Center at WesleyLife in Des Moines. There, she formed many close friendships with fellow residents and staff, who became like an extended family to her. Her Catholic faith was very important to her, and she found comfort and community attending St. Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines.
She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Alycia Gavin and Valerie Drane; her grandchildren, Anthony Gavin, Kyle Heisler, Austin Hammer, Daniel Drane, and Jenna Marler; and her great-grandchildren, Clara, Austin, Lyra, Ezra, and Elianna. She is also survived by her brother, Michael Gavin (Linda); six nieces and nephews; her good friend, Paula; and her many friends from the Dahl Adult Day Center.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marguerite Fay Gavin; and her close friend, Donna.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the family.
