Susan Lesan Smith

Susan was born on December 12, 1949, to Mary Eileen (Yashack) Lesan and Charles Joseph Lesan, joining her twin sister, Sharon Lee and big brother Steven Charles. Born in Creston, IA, Susan grew up in rural Ringgold County, baptized and reared in the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr, IA. Susan graduated from Mount Ayr High School, selected her senior year as a Homecoming Court attendant. She also held leading roles in multiple musical performances in both high school and early college years. Susan attended Southwest Community College, Creston, IA and Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, MO. She later transferred to Graceland College in Lamoni, IA, where she earned a Bachelor's degree.

On September 5, 1972, Susan moved to Des Moines, IA and began her teaching / library services career at Dowling Catholic High School (DCHS) in West Des Moines, IA. She was a valued member of the DCHS staff for 43 years until her retirement in 2016. In 1976, Susan married Clyde A. Smith in Des Moines, IA and together, they shared a life for eight years.

Susan had a deep love for her felines -- Peachy Tom and Agnes Anne, both a little persnickety she would say. She had a remarkable knack for computers and technology, helping students and staff alike navigate technical needs at DCHS Susan also had a knack for creating portfolios, custom DVD's and beautiful note cards for loved ones with thoughtful messages -- the kind you keep forever.

Susan meticulously organized her home, tended to her flower beds and cheered for the University of Iowa Basketball and Football teams -- Go Hawks. She also enjoyed certain soaps, as in TV soap operas. Like her mother, Susan was a wonderful cook and truly enjoyed preparing delicious meals and watching others savor them. She cherished her siblings and, for years, would call her sister Sharon, a resident of the Ringgold County Group Home, almost every Sunday around 4:30 p.m. to catch up on the week's news.

Susan had a special group of treasured friends, always by her side throughout her adult life: Linda, Sharon, Diana, and BR. Meeting early in their youth, Susan, Diana, and BR affectionately called themselves "The Three Amigos." And, indeed -- they were.

Susan departed her earthly journey on August 9, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. She was a treasured daughter, sister, confidant, and cherished friend to many who will forever hold her close in their hearts.
