Shirley Edwards

Shirley Darlene (Streeter) Edwards, 89, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2024 in Des Moines, IA. She was born to the late George Streeter and Mildred (Streeter) Verwaayen on March 14, 1935 in Chicago, IL. Shirley's elementary years were spent in Chicago. Her family moved from Chicago to Cedar Rapids, IA where she received her high school diploma. Shirley was a hard worker, she spent 18 years at American Can. They honored her with a plaque for an outstanding year. The first years there she rode her motorcycle from the south side to NE 14th. She said not many women ride a motorcycle to work. Shirley also added to the family finances by selling TriChem (liquid embroidery). She was the top seller in Iowa. Because of this honor she got to fly to New York and receive an award and also a mink coat. Shirley belonged to bowling leagues in her younger days. Shirley even took up square dancing for a few years. She loved the Iowa State Fair, gardening, word search puzzles and her beloved cat Jasper. She also enjoyed frequent trips to casinos with her daughter Alyce. She was married to Kirby Edwards and from this union five children were born.

She is survived by her children: Alyce (Wayne) Paterson of West Des Moines, IA, Richard (Deb) Edwards of Des Moines,IA, Cynthia (Michael) Rea of Longview, TX, Kenneth K Edwards of Des Moines, lA and Douglas (Christine) Edwards of lndianola, IA. 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; 1 brother Robert (Alice) Streeter of Cedar Rapids, IA and 2 sisters, Georgia Carter, Shelby Streeter of Reno, NV. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, sister Muriel Streeter and sister Frances Michelsen and grandson Douglas Joseph Edwards and the love of her life Harold (they were together for 22 years)

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday May 17, 2025 at 10a.m at GlendaIe Cemetery 4909 University Ave Des Moines Iowa
