Sally Renee Scully, 56, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away on February 22, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on October 3, 1968, in Des Moines to Owen Patrick Rafferty and Marsha Heggen and was later adopted by Bruce Hokel.
Sally grew up in Ankeny, where she built a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion to those she held dear. She attended Southeast Polk High School and later married the love of her life, Toby Scully, on Valentine's Day in 1994. Together, they shared a beautiful journey of over 30 years.
With a heart full of kindness and a nurturing spirit, Sally dedicated more than three decades to in-home daycare, caring for and shaping the lives of countless children. She had a deep love for animals-especially cats-and was known for her gentle nature, even taking care to avoid stepping on ants. She found joy in feeding the birds and squirrels in her yard, embracing the simple wonders of nature.
Sally's passions brought her happiness in many forms. She loved music, dancing, camping, and reading, and she adored Halloween-always finding the perfect costume to celebrate the season. But above all, her greatest love was her family. Her mom was her favorite person, and becoming a grandmother was the most cherished role of her life.
Sally's kindness, warmth, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of compassion lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
She is survived by her husband, Toby; her parents, Marsha Cunningham and Bruce Hokel (Barb); children, Dennis Lutyens (Angela Lopez), Tyler Lutyens (Jade), Toby Scully Jr. and Haley Scully; grandson, Ben Wittry Lutyens; brother, Sean Hokel (Renee); step-brothers, Kevin Cunningham (Sally) and Mike Cunningham; sister, Shannon Burright (Jeff); step-sisters, Kelly Hicks (John) and Jodi Selby (Scott); sisters-in-law, Kathy Cunningham, Kimberly Scully and Tina Scully; brothers-in-law, Michael Scully and Trent Scully; mother-in-law, Nancy Scully; multiple aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and her five cats.
Sally was preceded in death by her biological father, Owen Patrick Rafferty; step-father, Don Cunningham; and her step-brother, Mark Cunningham.
