Rodney Paul Williams

Jul 27, 1952 — Jul 25, 2026

Rodney Paul Williams, 73, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. A lifelong resident of Des Moines, Rodney was born in the city he proudly called home and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa. He was also a proud veteran who served his country with honor.

Rodney was, at his core, a big kid at heart. Those who knew him will remember him as one of the kindest and most forgiving people they had ever met. He had a gentle spirit, a warm smile, and a heart that made everyone feel welcome. He loved children, even though he never had any of his own, and his compassion and generosity touched countless lives.

He cherished spending his summers at Lake Okoboji, where he found peace, happiness, and treasured memories. Rodney often described himself as a hippie, embracing a life centered on kindness, acceptance, and love for others. Those closest to him would agree that he lived those values every day.

Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lorna Williams, and by his sister, Anne Williams. His family remembered Carl as a Harvard graduate who spent his career in banking, Lorna as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Iowa beginning in 1973, and Anne as a graduate of Colorado State University with a law degree.

Rodney is survived by the many friends, neighbors, and caregivers whose lives were enriched by his kindness and gentle nature.

Though Rodney's life was quiet, the impact he made was profound. His warmth, forgiving heart, and unwavering goodness will continue to live on in the memories of those fortunate enough to have known him. As his caregiver so beautifully expressed, "He was truly a ray of sunshine in a world of darkness."

Interment will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
