Robert J. "Jay" Howard

The world lost one of its most insightful, generous, and intelligent souls when Robert J. "Jay" Howard, 44, passed away on August 29, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jay was born on January 3, 1981, in Des Moines to Robbi Howard and Collette Howard. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1999 and spent 25 years as a dedicated laborer with Neumann Brothers Construction.

Though quiet at first, Jay's presence opened wide once you got to know him. Those who were fortunate enough to share in his world experienced a rare blend of intelligence, wit, and deep compassion. At just 44 years old, he carried the wisdom to remind us that, "The more you know, the more you realize what you don't know." He accepted people as they were-flaws and all-and treated everyone with respect and kindness.

Jay had a way of leaving a lasting mark on those he met. He will be remembered for the way he made people feel-seen, valued, and understood. His absence leaves a quiet space that cannot be filled, but his impact will be carried forward by those who knew and loved him.

Jay is survived by his father, Robbi (Vicki) Howard; his mother, Collette Howard, and stepfather, Willie Robinson; his brother, Lance Howard; and his sister, Jessie Hall and aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Jay's life will be held at a later date.
