Raymond William Burkett passed away surrounded by loving family and caregivers, leaving behind a life rich in family, dedication, and quiet joys. Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Raymond was the beloved son of Lena Dawn Hefner-Burkett and Mervin Wilbur Burkett. He grew up alongside his brother, Bill who was nine years his junior; their younger Bobby died shortly after birth.
Raymond graduated from East High School and went on to attend Grandview College, where he met the love of his life, Shirley. Their partnership became the foundation of a devoted marriage and a growing family. He later attended Drake University, earning his degree in Pharmacy and beginning a long and meaningful career serving others.
Raymond and Shirley built a loving home and raised three children: Jeff (Connie), Julie (Craig), and Jonay (Mike). His legacy continues through his five grandchildren, Chris (Heidi), Megan (Paul), Dylan (Jamie), Dallas, and Lily (Danya); three great-grandchildren, Nora, Clark, and Gemma, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Professionally, Raymond was a trusted and familiar presence in the community, starting his career in pharmacy at Sipes Prescription Shop. Mercy Hilltop Clinic was also a central part of family life, where Shirley worked alongside him as his pharmacy technician and their daughter Jonay served as a receptionist. Later, Raymond continued his work as a relief pharmacist for the Veterans Home in Marshalltown, extending his care to those who had served their country.
Raymond experienced deep loss when Shirley passed away on May 30, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Their enduring love remained a guiding presence in his life.
In the summer of 2023, Raymond moved to Valley View Village, where he was surrounded by a compassionate and dedicated care team who provided comfort and loving support until his passing.
Outside of his work, Raymond found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved fishing with Shirley and his family, especially on Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota. He was an avid sailor, spending many cherished hours with Shirley on Saylorville Lake. A devoted sports fan, Raymond enjoyed baseball, football, and basketball, and was a loyal supporter of the Chicago Cubs. He also had a deep love of reading, with a particular interest in history, especially World War II.
Raymond will be remembered for his steady presence, his devotion to family, and the care he showed to others throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
