Randy Scott Mandal, 68, of Adel, Iowa, passed away on April 19 after a courageous battle with cancer. He never let it slow him down, even in his final days.
Randy was born on May 17, 1957 in Bowman, North Dakota to Einar and Gail Mandal. He was raised with three siblings on their homestead in Bowman. Following school, Randy enlisted in the U.S. Army during which he served a tour in Germany. After his discharge, Randy worked most of his career on oil rigs throughout the Midwest region, and shared fond memories of laying bricks in Des Moines, Iowa.
Randy's true passion was geology and archeology, amassing an impressive collection of fossils, stones and Native American artifacts, some of which are now on display in a museum. Randy was a strong and intelligent man who wanted nothing more than to be outdoors in nature either on a kayak, tending a garden or building structures from the land's resources. He held his family's Norwegian heritage in high regard and as part of his final wishes was able to see his grandparents' immigration cards from Ellis Island.
Randy was an adventure seeker anywhere it could be found, from under ground exploring caves, up to solid ground hiking foot hills, out deep-sea fishing in ocean waters, kayaking river waters, and finally 10,000 feet up in the air fulfilling his dream of sky diving.
He is survived by his daughter Shellie Rae (Jeremiah) Peters, grandchildren Andrew and Addilee Peters, brother Rick Mandal, sister Pam Mandal Shaw, and nieces and nephews. Randy was blessed with many deep friendships at the end of his life who went to great lengths to bring him comfort and peace, special thanks to the Nichols Family. Randy was preceded in death by his father Einar Mandal, mother Gail Mandal, sister Peggy Gruba, aunt Corrine Hummel and his beloved four-legged companion, Maggie.
A celebration of life will be held among his close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Randy Mandal to the Fossil & Prairie Conservation Foundation in Floyd County, Iowa.
