Rachel JoAnn Wininger, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on June 20, 2023, in of Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on September 5, 1941, to Raymond and Bernice Cook, and grew up in Des Moines.
Rachel's journey began at East High School, where she graduated with the class of 1959. She then pursued higher education at both Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) and Drake University, where she nurtured her thirst for knowledge and developed a passion for lifelong learning.
In June of 1988, Rachel embarked on a joyous union with her loving husband, John Wininger. Together, they discovered shared interests that brought them immense happiness. Rachel and John reveled in attending car shows, exploring antique cars, and actively participating in Corvette clubs. Their shared love for travel allowed them to create countless memories and experience the wonders of the world together.
Rachel's legacy lives on through her children, David (Laura) Carlson of Omaha, NE, Joe (Raina) Graham of Perry, and Becky (Gil) Palmer of West Des Moines; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and brother-in-law, Terry Hoffman.
Rachel was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, Raymond and Bernice Cook, and her sister, Patricia Hoffman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Christ the King Catholic Church on SW 9th St., Des Moines, IA. Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM to 11:00 at the church. Inurnment will be at 12:30 AM at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA.
