Nancy Belle Dowell

Nancy Belle Dowell, age 90, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home on March 4, 2026.

Nancy was born on February 12, 1936, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Carlton B. and Marydell (Warren) Shaw. She grew up in Iowa and developed a deep appreciation for home and rural life that stayed with her throughout her years.

On January 17, 1953, Nancy married the love of her life, Gene Edwin Dowell. Together they built a life centered around family and the countryside they loved. Gene preceded her in death on July 14, 2001. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Richard Daniel Dowell, Gail Robin Dowell, and Daniel Gene Dowell.

Nancy spent more than 50 years at the homeplace she cherished so deeply. She loved caring for animals and had a special affection for her horses and dogs. She also enjoyed raising sheep and embraced the rhythms of country living. Most of all, Nancy treasured having her family gathered together at her home, where many memories were made over the years.

She also had a love for music, particularly rock and blues, and could often be found listening to two of her favorites, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton. Those who knew Nancy will remember her strong will and the stubborn streak she carried with a bit of pride.

She is survived by her children, Gail Dowell and Dan Dowell (Wendy); her grandchildren, Troy, Jesse, Wesley, Carrie, Neil, Crystal, Dustin, and Ashlyn; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Bell; and her daughter-in-law, Diane Dowell.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene Dowell; her son, Richard Daniel Dowell, who passed away on September 12, 2015; and her brother-in-law, Barry Bell.

Nancy will be remembered for her love of family, her devotion to her home and animals, and the life she built on the land she loved.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at St Charles Parish, 305 W Main St, St Charles, IA 50240. The Service will begin at 2:00 pm, and a gathering will follow.
