Michael Hofer

August 20, 1960 — June 18, 2025

Our cherished husband, father, and Papa is free- welcomed into his eternal home filled with love, joy, and peace.

Michael Hofer, age 64, of Indianola, Iowa died on June 18, 2025.

We celebrate his unwavering love for his family and his devoted commitment to his professional career.

Mike was born in Aurora, Colorado on August 20,1960 to Mary Jo Hofer- who proudly spoke of all her children to everyone she met and held deep pride in Mike and his many accomplishments.

Mike attended high school in Sioux City, Iowa and continued his education, earning an A.A. degree in Electronic Engineering Technology at WITTC in Sioux City. In 1991 he shifted his focus to study Nuclear Medicine Technology, earning his degree in 2 years, in Sioux Falls, S.D. For the next 32 years, Mike dedicated himself to his profession with unwavering passion. His career included roles at Cardiovascular Associates in Sioux City, CHI Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, and most recently, Pella Regional Health Center in Pella, IA.

Mike met Penny Doupe in 1982, in Sioux City, Iowa. They were married June 23, 1984 in Sioux City and spent nearly 41 years together as husband and wife. This union brought the blessing of two sons. Joseph Michael was born in 1986, and in 1991 Samuel Nicholas was born. Mike was incredibly proud of his boys and cherished them more than they know.

Mike had a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He found joy in hunting, fishing, archery, baseball, boating, wood carving, reading, coaching youth baseball, motorcycles, and even mowing the lawn. He took great pride in his work in Nuclear Medicine and he was a talented handyman who loved to fix things. He often credited his maternal grandfather, George Gengler, for passing down those skills and inspiring his love for working with his hands by taking him along on jobs when he was a small boy.

Ultimately, Mike's most favorite role was that of grandparent. He treasured his time with his 2 granddaughters, Sawyer Ray (10) and Saylor Jo (5) who were the center of his world. He loved being their Papa more than anything else, and they brought light to his day when they entered a room. The girls will miss him pushing their swings, saying how proud he was of them in all that they do, his tickle bug game and sharing his chips.

Michael will be deeply missed by many- more than he could understand. He will live on in the hearts of all who loved him dearly.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Penny, of Indianola, Iowa; his sons, Joey (Sarah) Hofer, of Norwalk, Iowa; Sam (Cassandra) Hofer of Indianola, Iowa; and his cherished granddaughters, Sawyer and Saylor of Norwalk, Iowa.

He is also survived by his siblings, Taresa (Tom) Crawford of Sioux City, IA, Daniel (Mary) Hofer of Seminole, OK, and Nicholas (Amy) Hofer of San Diego, CA, along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and extended family.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jo (Gengler) Hofer and his maternal grandparents George and Bernice (Mayrose) Gengler.

The family will honor Mike's life with small private celebration at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family at their homes, for further designation in Mike's honor.

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away
