Michael Keith Bryant passed away on April 2, 2024 in Des Moines, Iowa.Born on August 1, 1952 to Keith and Cleo Shannon-Bryant, Michael spent his formative years in Sigourney, Iowa where he enjoyed all the freedom and pleasures that a rural community offered. After graduating from Sigourney High School in 1970, he went on to study at Drake University, completing a bachelor's degree in theatre arts in 1974, and a master's in English in 1979. Those years at Drake brought him close to a special cadre of friends and mentors.
Active in the university's drama department, Michael was a respected and award-winning playwright, actor and director. Along with his outstanding academic achievements, Michael would travel internationally where his love for language and culture were further expanded and refined.
For the next forty-five years, Michael would pursue a career in teaching. He was first employed by Drake University as a faculty member of the English department. Later, Michael became a valued contributor in the writing and production for many of the University's initial online courses and study guides. Eventually, he would expand his professional reach as a journalism faculty member at the Des Moines Area Community College. It was at DMACC that his work included the supervision and production of student publications and teaching English as a second language.
Michael had an unrivaled passion for music, film and literature. In those formative years, Mike played a brilliant Fender Bronco with friends and area bands. His personal collection of recorded music and classic film was both expansive and well-considered. A lifelong and enthusiastic study of literature and fine art made him a serious critic and trusted source for his students, colleagues, friends and family.
Michael was also a passionate and knowledgeable baseball fan. He especially enjoyed listening to the St. Louis Cardinal's on a transistor radio; a habit that could be traced back to his early childhood. A highly selective collector of memorabilia, he also enjoyed attending professional games, including the local Iowa Cubs.
Whether it was telling stories to his nieces and nephew, cracking-wise with his close friends, or shaping the perspective of a student, Michael Bryant was unsurpassed. His wit and sincerity will be his lasting legacy.
Michael is survived by his two brothers, Tom (Joy) of Estes Park, CO and Dan (Stacia) of Alexandria, VA as well as five nieces, one nephew and two great nephews and one great niece. A private memorial service will be held at one of his favorite spots in Colorado.
