Michael John Brookes was born 10-17-64 to Donna and Jack Brookes.
Growing up on the south side of Des Moines as a plaza kid- he made many life long friends, and made plenty of mischief. Always the life of the party, he never met a stranger. He loved fishing, mushroom hunting, football (Hawkeye man through and through) cooking and riding his Harley.
1986 was the beginning of his career as a lineman. After his apprenticeship he traveled the country building power lines and giving families and communities power back after major storms. He worked countless days and hours doing what he loved, all while taking care of his family, raising 3 children and helping raise many more. He was a huge union man, organizing an annual memorial bike ride for members in need. He ended his career as the business manager of his local union hall, IBEW Local 55.
Upon retirement, he spent his time with his grandkids, his friends and his dog Joplin. He was a great man. Tough, but compassionate. He gave his all to help anyone, always took care and protected those he loved with everything he had. He sure looked scary, but he had the biggest heart. He gave the best bear hugs, and he had a laugh that filled the room. And he was LOUD, sorry if you ever had to watch a Hawks game with him, you probably had an ear drum pop.
The world is a much sadder and quieter place without him. And we will miss him immensely. See you on the other side, Papa Bear.
Preceded in death by his parents, Donna (Larry) Keul, and John 'Jack' Brookes
Survived by his sister Holly (Rick) Hawxby. Childern, Kristopher, Kassandra (Miguel) and Taylor. Grandchildren, Gage, Nova, Baylee, Luna, Melana, Kyra and Milo.
