Marlin, 64, passed away on February 17, 2026, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines,
Iowa.
He was born on March 23, 1961, in Mason City, Iowa, to Susan and Marlin Deets Sr. He
graduated from Saydel High School in 1979. During his first marriage, he welcomed
three sons, and later, during his second and final marriage, he welcomed another son.
Marlin was a proud member of the Local 177 Laborers Union for over 30 years before
retiring in 2016. In his younger years, he loved fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting (and
teaching all the boys how to do the same), gardening, and cooking - and if you know
me Carolyn, you know how much I loved that he did all the cooking. He enjoyed
smoking meat and sharing it with neighbors and friends. He was an avid fan of
NASCAR and the Green Bay Packers, and in his retirement years he especially loved
simply driving around; he hated being cooped up. But he was always a loving father to
his boys, grandchildren and pets.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his sons Jason (Pam), Joe (Rachel), Jeff, and Cody;
his parents Marlin and Sue; his sister Debbie (Steve); his brother Emmet; his sister
Becky; his grandchildren Megan and Rhys; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and
uncles. He is preceded in death by all his paternal grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Doc's Lounge in
Johnston, Iowa, beginning at 5 p.m.
