Lorn Gale West

Lorn Gale West, 57, passed away unexpectedly on May 31, 2026, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Lorn was a private man with a vibrant imagination and a deep appreciation for the things he loved. He was passionate about Renaissance history, dragons, magic, and fantasy storytelling, often spending time writing short stories inspired by the worlds he enjoyed. He found peace in the outdoors, whether hiking local trails, tending to his garden, or working on projects around his home. Lorn had a talent for fixing things and took pride in helping others both in his personal life and through his dedicated work.

Above all, Lorn cherished his family. He is survived by his significant other, Cindy Goldsmith; his children, Courtney Rhum and Dillon West; his beloved grandchildren, Ryder and Marlee Rhum; his sister, Paula Bielenberg of Bagley, Iowa; and his parents, John and Marilyn West of Yale, Iowa. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren and took great joy in spoiling them.

Lorn also held a special place in his heart for his beloved cats, Aveta, Gypsy, Savvin, and Furbahl, who brought him comfort and companionship throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy West.

Though he preferred a quiet life, Lorn's presence, kindness, creativity, and love for those closest to him left a lasting impact. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and all who knew him.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
