Kurt Dean Nelson

Kurt Dean Nelson, 64, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on May 10, 2026.

Kurt was born on January 12, 1962, in Seattle, Washington. He later made his home in Iowa, where he was known for his independent spirit and appreciation for the simple things in life.

He was a beloved "wise elder" in his recovery community in Des Moines and Ames. Over the years, Kurt provided wise counsel to many lost souls-and he helped a lot of struggling folks get back on their feet. He touched many lives in a loving and positive way.

A graduate of Ames High School, Kurt enjoyed working with his hands and took pride in home improvement projects and maintaining his yard. He valued time spent with close friends and enjoyed good music and movies.

Kurt is survived by his brother, Eric Nelson; his sister, Liann Nelson; his beloved dog, Emma; and other family members and friends who will remember him fondly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Bonnie (McDaniel) Nelson, and his brother, J.L. Nelson.

Kurt will be remembered for his practical nature, his appreciation for friendship, and the care he put into the things he loved.

In keeping with family tradition, there will be no formal memorial services held-but the family encourages his friends and community to gather as they choose to remember him and celebrate his life.

Kurt had a strong belief in social justice, and he cared deeply about the underprivileged and downtrodden. In lieu of flowers or other tokens of appreciation, donations may be made to the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle, Washington.
