Katherine Ann Shay

Katherine Ann Shay, age 79, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away on May 13, 2026. She was born on December 9, 1946, in Creston, Iowa, to John Joseph and Katherine Dorothy (Peak) Shay.

Katherine grew up in Iowa and, for a short time, lived in Arizona before eventually returning to the Midwest she always considered home. She attended college to pursue a career in nursing, a profession that reflected her caring and compassionate nature. Katherine spent many years faithfully serving others as a nurse and later retired as a home healthcare nurse, where she found great fulfillment helping patients in the comfort of their own homes.

Outside of her career, Katherine embraced life with curiosity, kindness, and individuality. She loved traveling and had a deep appreciation for history, always eager to learn about the past and explore new places. Gardening brought her great joy and peace, and she could often be found tending to her flowers and plants with care.

Katherine was also proudly known as a devoted "Deadhead," carrying a lifelong love for the Grateful Dead and the spirit of community and freedom their music inspired. More than anything, Katherine cherished her friendships. She deeply loved spending time with her friends, sharing stories, laughter, music, and memories that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will also be lovingly missed by her cherished cat, Nala Marie.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, John and Katherine Shay.

She leaves behind many dear friends and extended family who will remember her warmth, compassion, free spirit, and the genuine love she shared with others.
