Karl Ray Gilbert

Karl Ray Gilbert, 59, passed away unexpectedly at his family home on October 5, 2025. A Funeral will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at Simplify Cremations & Funerals (4821 SW 9th Street) in Des Moines.

Karl was born July 12th, 1966, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Arthur and Geraldine Gilbert. He attended and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1984. In 1987, he had his first son and was blessed with two more in his lifetime. His children gave him grandchildren and great grandchildren that became the purpose of his life.

Karl loved fishing and hunting, and he could often be found cheering for his favorite NASCAR drivers or rooting for the New York Jets on game day. His greatest love was being a grandfather and great-grandfather.

Karl is survived by his father: Arthur Gilbert; 3 sons: Justin (Michelle) Gilbert; Andrew (Dakota) Gilbert; Dominic (Ashlei) Sanford; 12 Grandchildren: Brittany (Jon), Ricky, Alexis, Authina, Aaliyah, Jordan, Andrew Jr, Kacie, Kenna, Ivy, Winston, Waylon and 4 Great Grandchildren: Tanner, Xohi, Parker and Olivia.

Karl is also survived by his brothers, Alan (Barbara) Brown, Gary (Shellie) Brown, and sister, Sherry Brown. Along with many nieces, nephews and many more family and friends.

Karl is preceded in death by his mother Geraldine Gilbert and Step mother Margaret Gilbert.

His presence will be missed beyond words, but his love will forever be felt in the hearts of those he cherished.
