Dale Thompson

John Dale Thompson, born on February 7, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of  Asa and Pearl (Miller) Thompson, peacefully passed away on September 4, 2023. He lived a life filled with cherished moments and shared love.

After graduating from Tech High School in 1958, Dale answered the call of duty and enlisted in the United States Air Force. Dale married his high school sweetheart Sharon Duckworth, on April 5, 1959. Their union was a testament to enduring love and companionship.

Dale's career was marked by his dedication to journalism. He began working at local papers before finding his true calling at the Des Moines Register in 1967, where he diligently contributed to the dissemination of news for many years until his well-earned retirement in 2000.

Beyond his professional life, Dale had a passion for motorcycles and embarked on numerous memorable trips with his son, Randy. He was an avid football enthusiast and enjoyed tackling challenging puzzles, following NASCAR races, and supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes. His active spirit extended to volunteering with Meals on Wheels, a testament to his kind and giving nature.

Above all, Dale treasured spending quality time with his family. His presence at gatherings and celebrations brought joy to those he loved.

Dale is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon, their children, Dorothy Jean Thompson, Randall Dale Thompson, and Tamela Renee Ewing, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Gary (Connie) Thompson, and brother-in-law, Dale Duckworth, along with many nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Richelle Kay Barlow, grandson Adam John Baumert, brother Harold Thompson, sisters Beverly Jean Thompson and Shirley Sloan, and Pete Johnson (Dorothy's lifelong partner) and future son-in-law Randy Johnson (Tammy's fiancé); in-laws, Clell and Dorothy Duckworth, sister-in-law Diane Duckworth, and brother-in-law Robert (Penny) Duckworth.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Life Church in Waukee. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
