Jesse James Self

Jesse James Self, 22, formerly of Beardstown, Illinois and most recently Chillicothe, Iowa passed away surrounded by his loving family on September 24, 2026 at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. He was born on June 22, 2004, in Springfield Illinois. Jesse attended and graduated high school in Eddyville, Iowa.

Though his life was far too short, he filled it with the people and activities that brought him happiness.

Jesse loved to play video games, especially with his nephew Steven and brother-in-law Keagan. He could often be found with his friends Jayden and Roman. When the weather was right and an afternoon was free he would fish with Keagan or work on cars with his nephew Marion. Music was also an important part of his life, he loved to sing in the car or karoake, whenever the mood struck.

Jesse was the son of Michelle Kay Bruley, and James William Self. He is survived by his father James and his siblings; Mary Self- Banda Mendez, Hannah Self, Jeremiah Self, and Justin Mathis; his beloved nephews and niece Steven Self; Timothy Walton and Lydia Mathis; his grandparents Janell and Steven Gustafson; his brothers-in-law Keagan Seagle and Jose Banda; and the countless extended family and friends he loved.

He is preceded in death by his mother Michelle Bruley, and his nephew and friend Marion Mathis.

Jesse will be remembered for the simple things that made him happy-gaming with his family, hanging with his friends, and singing all the songs he loved. At just 22 years old, his time with those two loved him was much too brief, but the memories they created together will remain cherished in their memories.

His family and friends will carry Jesse's memory with them through the songs, laughter, games, and everyday moments that remind them of him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all those who knew him.
