Janet Garrison

November 5, 1940 — July 20, 2024

Janet Fay Garrison, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024, in Norwalk, Iowa. Born on November 4, 1940, in Marble Rock, Iowa, Janet was the cherished daughter of Clarence and Merna (née Brunner) Teeple.

Janet spent her formative years in Greene, Iowa, where her father and uncle were well-known for operating the town's two gas stations. She graduated from high school in 1958 and soon after embarked on a journey of service by joining the US Navy. Janet proudly served for a year and a half before dedicating herself to the role of a Navy wife, supporting her husband and other service members throughout her life.

Her life as a military spouse took her to various corners of the world, including Guam, Bethesda, Maryland, San Diego, California, Glenview, Illinois, Adak, Alaska, and finally, Norwalk, Iowa. She spent over 30 years working at the AAFES (Army Air Force Exchange Service) at the multiple locations that she lived, including Fort Des Moines. Janet embraced the adventure of each new location with a love for travel, particularly enjoying the landscapes and beauty of the western United States. Her passion for National Parks was unmatched, with Yellowstone holding a special place in her heart, where she enjoyed working at the gift shop.

Janet's adventurous spirit led her to memorable destinations such as Niagara Falls and New Orleans. She also had a thrill for white-water rafting, having navigated the rapids of the Colorado, Arkansas, and Snake Rivers.

Known for her great sense of humor, Janet's laughter and joyful spirit touched the lives of many. She was a devoted supporter of the Iowa State Fair, where she took pride in working at the gate every day of the fair for many years.

Janet's legacy of love, humor, and adventure will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. She leaves behind a world enriched by her presence and a family and community who will forever cherish her memory.

Janet is survived by her sister, Dorene Pierce (Norman); children, Teresa Calkins and Michael W. Garrison; grandchildren, Amanda Sinkewjz (Katie), Clifford Calkins, Sarah Kinkennon (David) and Christopher W. Garrison; and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and nephew, Brad Pierce.
