James Robert Lee Smith, 76, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away on May 29, 2026, at EdenCrest at Siena Hills.
James was born on February 10, 1950, in Tacoma, Washington. He was a proud veteran who dedicated 21 years of service to the United States Air Force. During his military career, he traveled overseas five times and honorably served his country with pride and commitment. Following his retirement from the military, James continued to live a life grounded in faith, patriotism, and devotion to family.
A deeply patriotic Christian man, James carried his Bible with him wherever he went and found strength and comfort in his faith throughout his life. He was active in the VFW in Spencer, Iowa, and valued the friendships and camaraderie he found there.
James loved the outdoors and especially cherished time spent with his beloved dog, Blue. He was known for his caring heart and unwavering dedication to those he loved. He faithfully cared for his late wife, Mary, until the end of her life and missed her dearly every day afterward.
He is survived by his children, Suzy Smith (Brian Malloy), Walter Smith, Christina Bash (Smith), and David Smith (Gloria Marquez); his grandchildren, Shelby Karl, Cory Templeton II, Hope Wallace (Robert), Aiden Kelly (Kaydience), Jeremy Bash (Shelby), Addyson Smith (Kyle), Adriana Bash, Roland Bash, and Darwin Bash; and his great-grandchildren, Ava, Arya, Michael, and Frankie.
He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn Hauser (Smith) and Karen Meloche (Smith). He was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Campen (Smith); his wife, Mary; and his parents, Wilbur Smith and Gladys (Leverson) Smith.
James will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, deep faith, and the love he gave to his family, friends, and country throughout his life.
A Committal Service will be held on Wednesday, June 3, at 11:00 am at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, located at: 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr, Adel, IA 50003. Please arrive by 10:45 am and park by the main office until directed to the committal shelter.
