Jim (James) Harold Olson, 68, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away surrounded by loved ones on November 22, 2024, at Taylor House in Des Moines, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Jim was born on January 19, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Darrell Olson and Sari Robertson (later Hinrichs).
A proud graduate of North High School in Des Moines, Class of 1974, Jim embarked on an electrician's apprenticeship while still in school, launching a remarkable career as a master electrician. He dedicated himself to his craft until his retirement in 2021. From 1994 to 1999, Jim took a meaningful hiatus from his electrical work to serve as a deputy for the Marion County Sheriff's Office, a role that reflected his lifelong commitment to service and community.
Jim was deeply involved in scouting from an early age, proudly working his way through the ranks of Troop #34, an experience that fostered his love for the outdoors and his passion for mentorship. He cherished his hobbies, finding joy in building connections and pursuing projects that brought him and others happiness.
Jim was the kind of person who could-and did-befriend anyone. His sense of humor, genuine kindness, and knack for finding joy in every moment left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His greatest love, however, was reserved for his family. Nothing brought him more happiness than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and a loyal dog snuggled on his lap. He selflessly cared for others and preferred to give rather than receive care in return.
Jim is survived by his siblings Jack (Patricia) Olson of Bondurant,IA, Gerald (Teresa) Hinrichs of Murphy, TX, Jane (Monte) Beery of Overland Park, KS, Deborah (Ron) Repp of Sigourney, and Thomas (Kala) King of Confidence, IA. He leaves behind six children: Michael Darrell Olson of West Des Moines,IA, Mark (Koren) Olson of Melbourne, FL, Jennifer (Joe) Wright of Bloomfield, IA, Michael Robert (Emily) Olson of Bloomfield, IA, Jessica Olson of Waukee, IA and Ana (Andrew) Friesen of Waukee, IA. He was also a beloved grandfather to 13 grandchildren and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Brad Olson, and his great-grandsons Jaxtyn and Westin.
A celebration of Jim's life will take place on December 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Crossroads Community Church, 410 SE Main St, Grimes, IA 50111, with a lunch reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jim's family to be directed to causes close to his heart.
Jim lived a life of service, love, and laughter, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
