Jack Merion Patten, 90, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2026.
Jack was born on March 13, 1936, in Norwalk, Iowa, to Theodore Lamont Patten and Violet Gwendolyn Patten. He graduated from Norwalk High School and, at the age of 17, proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force. Jack served his country from February 1954 until February 1962, with assignments that took him to France, Africa, Guam, and Tucson Arizona. His years of service reflected his lifelong dedication, discipline, and sense of duty.
On 23 March 1957, Jack married the love of his life, Jo Ann Patten, with whom he shared 69 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a strong and loving family and were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Dawn, Danielle, and Jacqulyn, and a son, Shawn, who remained the center of Jack's life.
Following his military service, Jack worked for Toledo Scale and later dedicated his career to the Iowa Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector, where he was known for his strong work ethic and integrity.
Jack was deeply involved in his community. He was a proud member of the Freemasons for 50 years and the American Legion for 60 years. He found joy in woodworking, gardening, playing cards, and keeping his yard in immaculate condition. He was also a huge Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching baseball games. More than anything, Jack cherished time spent with family and friends, his greatest joy and proudest legacy.
Jack will be remembered as a hardworking, social, and selfless man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of many.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one brother; a daughter; an infant son; and two grandsons.
He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Jo Ann Patten; daughters Dawn (Steve) Roth and Danielle (Brian) Piercy; 15 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and soon-to-be nine great-great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jack's honor to the Alzheimer's Association of Iowa.
Graveside services will be held on June 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. All who wish to attend are welcome. An open house will be held on June 6, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the home of Jack and Jo Ann.
Jack's legacy of love, service, and generosity will live on in all who knew him.
