George John Hess

George John Hess, age 79, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on August 2, 2026.

George was born on May 25, 1947, in Sigourney, Iowa to Claude and Cornelia (Hessling) Hess.

After graduating High School in Indianola, Iowa, George served in the US Air Force. On March 17, 1979, he married Vicki Lynn Burbank and they had 2 children, Derek Hess and Shawn Hess. George spent many years working for the State of Iowa in many capacities. He also worked part time for the Des Moines Buccaneers as an event staff and an usher.

George loved taking daily walks and serving in his church, helping with the food pantry and the coffee bar. He always looked forward to bowling with his son on Thursday nights, going to baseball and hockey games and rarely missed a grandchilds sporting event.

He is survived by his son, Derek Hess(Sarajane Hess); grandchildren, Cameron, Ayanna, Ayden, Avayah, Cambria, Aaron, Noah, Micah, Isaiah and Leah; great-grandchildren, Tayvon and Malachi; and siblings, Norman Hess and Becky Harryman.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Hess; daughter, Shawn Hess, parents, Claude and Cornelia Hess; and siblings, James Hess, Charlie Hess, Timothy Hess and Virginia Plummer.
