Gary Wayne Trowbridge, age 70, passed away Friday, January 17, 2025, at his home in Des Moines.
Gary was born January 30, 1954, in Greenville, South Carolina to Jerry and Minnie (Duncan) Trowbridge. He grew up in California, graduating from Barstow High School in Barstow, California in 1972. Gary was very athletic and was the star quarterback for his high school football team. He also played basketball, baseball, and pole vaulted for the track team. He was involved in every sport during those years.
Gary joined the Air Force after graduation, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant, and was honorably discharged in 1976. Gary played on the Semi-Pro American Football Team while in the Air Force in England. He was also a Fire Protection Specialist in the Air Force and for the Des Moines Airport. He was a firefighter for over ten years. After he retired from fire service, he became a car salesman for Charles Gabus and he worked for Homemakers.
Gary loved the Iowa State Fair. He would go every year and the first Friday of the fair was family day. He was a thrill seeker, and bungee jumped and parasailed for the excitement. His favorite Christmas movie was "It's a Wonderful Life", and he loved dancing, especially to his favorite song, "Unchained Melody". He loved watching his favorite football team, the Rams and golfing. Gary was known as a carefree person. He would give you the shirt off his back and always put the needs of others before his own.
He is survived by his children, Andrea Correy and Jerry Trowbridge; grandchildren, Demerie and Caidan Correy, and Quardell Kelly; great-grandson, Waylon Belcher; siblings, Robert Trowbridge, Eddie Trowbridge, and Mary Kathleen Griffin; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by infant son, Baby Trowbridge; brother, Kurt Trowbridge; the mother of his children, Sarah Trowbridge; and his parents, Jerry and Minnie Trowbridge.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.Gary will eventually be interred at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
