Frances Lorain Shank

Frances Lorain McVey, Shannon, Shank, 78, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend passed away on July 8th, 2025 in Ankeny, Iowa surrounded by her family. She was born on January 23,1947 to Pearl Marvin McVey and Anna Etta Hill. She was one of eight kids. She was born in Osceola, Iowa but shortly after moved to Des Moines, Iowa.

Frances dedicated her career to helping others, working in healthcare. She earned her med aide certificate in 1975. She enjoyed her time working for Mosaic, and volunteering her time being a companion to the elderly. She was awarded the Governors Award for Volunteering in 2019. She was known for her strong will, unwavering determination, and love for her family, friends and her community.

She survived by her cat Amber, sisters Mae Gilson, and Wanda Kern, her children Terri McAtee, Lonnie (Kathy) Shannon, Jim (Mary) Shank, John Shank, daughter in law Kathy Shank, 19 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She faced her battle with cancer with strength and grace, never losing her sense of humor or her infectious smile. Frances will be remembered for her love of baking goodies, fishing, listening to Gospel music, and going thrift shopping with her two sisters Mae and Wanda, her two nieces Shelly and Carla, her granddaughter Brianna, and her great granddaughter River.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her son Randy Shank, her companion Larry Templeton, sister Gloria Irene Carter, brothers Buttons McVey, and Bud McVey, brother in laws Roger Gillson, Tom Carter, and Karl Kern, and her cat Glory Grace.

In accordance with Frances wishes her ashes will be scattered privately. Understanding and continued prayers are appreciated during this time.
