David William Mixdorf

December 28, 1954 — March 3, 2026

Our hearts are saddened to announce the passing of David (Dave) Mixdorf, born on December 28, 1954. He passed away March 3 at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines from injuries sustained by a bad fall. He was surrounded by his wife Rhonda Mixdorf, his son Joel, daughter-in-law Stephanie, their 2 beautiful children Will and Annabelle, and Rhonda's daughter, Regina.

Born the 3rd child of 6, you could easily call Dave the "character" of the family. He was quick of wit and always had a funny or sarcastic response at the drop of a hat. He was an educator with a vast area of knowledge, which made him an excellent librarian. He could speak on technology, geography, politics, world events, animals, or nature. He could mimic the songs of all different species of birds and has been known to hoot a conversation with an owl or two.

He served 2 years in the United States Army at the end of the Vietnam conflict from 1974-1976 as a Military Policeman. He was also a master gardener and a conservationist, raising rare species of plants, as well as rabbits and chickens. Before his days as a librarian, Dave was the Activities Director at Camp Courageous of Iowa, helping those with mental and physical disabilities achieve more in life than just being confined to a wheelchair.

His love of nature, animals, his country, and most of all his family, is what we will always remember. He would be the first to say "don't fuss over me", but he would be right there when you needed someone. He was a true Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan and loved attending and exhibiting at the Iowa State Fair.

Those who had the honor to know him will all have their special memories. We will all grieve in our own ways and in our own amount of time. The "character" of this man as a gentleman and a humanitarian will not soon be forgotten. He will always be remembered as a great husband, dad, and Papa Dave.
