Darrell Wayne Swope

Darrell Wayne Swope, age 92, of Bondurant, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026. He was born on October 4, 1933, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Charles Raymond and Opal (Freeman) Swope.

At the age of 18, Darrell enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served in Korea as a paratrooper with the 187th Airborne. Following his military service, he continued his education at Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1959 and went on to build a successful career as a Design Engineer, working in Research and Development.

Darrell was married early in life to Jacqueline Smith, and together they welcomed two sons, Darrell Wayne Swope II and Daniel Swope. On January 14, 1978, Darrell married Leona Eklofe in Ottumwa. Through their marriage, Darrell gained a daughter, Heather Sipes, and together they built a loving family.

Darrell had many successful careers throughout his life. He was especially proud of his time working in California. He helped design the electrical connectors for the Apollo 13 mission and space sled. He later moved back to Ottumwa, Iowa. He worked for Everco Industries for 21 years and retired in 1991.

Darrell enjoyed the outdoors and cherished time spent boating on Lake Rathbun, camping and hiking. He also had a true passion for winemaking and spent many years perfecting his craft, producing countless incredible wines that were enjoyed by family and friends. He will especially miss his little friend "red-headed tornado". His interests, talents and willingness to share what he created brought many happy memories to those around him.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Leona; son, Daniel Swope (Kim); daughter, Heather Sipes; grandchildren, Jesse, Jeremy, Holly, Andrew, Jamie and Eric; 15 great-grandchildren; and brothers, David Swope (Linda) and DeVern Swope.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Raymond and Opal Swope; his son, Darrell Wayne Swope II; brothers, Doyle Swope and Baby Raymond Swope; sister, DelReice Van Winkle; and grandson Travis Swope.

Darrell will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his love of the outdoors, his dedication to his family and the many memories he created throughout his 92 years. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of life is planned on September 19, 2026 at the Lodge, Lake Darling: 111 Lake Darling Rd, Brighton, IA 52540. Lunch will be served at Noon.
