Charles "Gary" Van Gundy, 83, of Ankeny, IA, passed away, Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA, surrounded by his family. Cremation rites have been accorded and a private family graveside service will take place at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
Gary was born to Warden and Velma (McGowan) Van Gundy in Des Moines on December 25, 1939. He graduated from East High School in 1958. He married Sondra Smith on November 28, 1986. Gary was a Journeyman Pressman at the Des Moines Register for 42 years. He was involved in the Cyclone Corvette Club. Gary was a gifted musician and enjoyed playing the piano, saxophone and numerous instruments. Over the years he found enjoyment in his toys which include his cars, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. He took great pride in his Corvettes. Gary was a kind, gentle, and caring father as well as a grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Sondra Van Gundy, of Ankeny, IA, children: Debbie (Rick) Greene, of Pleasant Hill, IA, Derek Van Gundy of Urbandale, IA, Wally (Janis) Smith of Altoona, IA, Rusty (Melissa) Smith of Runnells, IA, nine grandchildren: Shelby (Tyler) Silver, Sidney (Joey) Stoll, Gracelyn Van Gundy, Nathan Van Gundy, Emily (Dillon) Eisenlauer, Isabel Smith, Keaton Smith, Madelyn Smith, Lochlan Smith, and two great-grandchildren: Isla Stoll, Della Silver. He is preceded in death by his parents Warden and Velma, one granddaughter, Emma Kay Victoria Smith, and a special uncle Harry (Katy) McGowan.
