Charles Henry Hood, Jr.

Charles Henry Hood Jr., age 75, of Altoona, Iowa, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024. He was born on January 9, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Charles Sr. and Golda (née Sedwick) Hood.

Charles grew up in both Des Moines and Perry, Iowa, where he developed an early love for cars and woodworking. These passions shaped his life, and he shared them widely with his family, friends, and community. On October 3, 1969, he married the love of his life, Virginia Welch, in West Des Moines, Iowa. In 1977, they settled in Altoona, where they raised their family and built a strong foundation in the community.

For many years, Charles was the proud owner and operator of Chuck's Auto Parts in Prairie City, Iowa. Known for his keen eye for quality and a deep knowledge of his trade, he ran the store with dedication and care. In the back of the shop, he also pursued his woodworking passion, operating "Woodchuck's Woodworking"-a space where he crafted unique pieces, blending skill with creativity. Later in life, he continued to share his expertise in the auto industry as an employee of O'Reilly's Auto Parts, where he worked until his retirement.

A proud member of the local Woodworkers Club, Charles took joy in honing his craft and learning alongside fellow enthusiasts. His workbench was always open to friends and family seeking advice on projects or simply a good conversation.

Charles legacy of hard work, kindness, and craftsmanship will be cherished by all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia; children, Douglas Hood (Amie) and Andrea Halverson (Ray); grandchildren, Courtney Lyle (Drew), Emily Hood (Tyler), Nicholas Hood and Madison Wolfe; great-grandchildren, Chase, Brielle, Brighton, Jack, Mckenna and Bailey; siblings, Janie Hood, Johnny Hood and Susan Harlan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sibling, Charlotte Burris.
