Barbara Bailes Mathias, 89, of Story City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2024 surrounded by loving family at Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames, Iowa. Barb is survived by her three adult children: John Mathias, Jr. of Olathe, Kansas; Jeff Mathias of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Suz "Sunny" Hatcher of Rushville, Ohio. She was also a cherished grandmother to seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, who fondly remember her distinctive high-pitched "woo-oos" that signaled her presence nearby.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Barb led a life filled with adventure, service, and love for her family and community. She graduated from Northwestern University and in 1957 married John Mathias, Sr. Her journey took her to St. Louis, Ames, and Des Moines before settling in Story City for her retirement years.
During her time in Ames, Barb made significant contributions to the community by directing the YWCA at Iowa State University and founding the Frame Shop, a small business on Welch Avenue that later relocated to Main Street. In Des Moines, Barb's passion for cultural exchange shone through her work with the Iowa Council for International Understanding, where she hosted visitors from around the globe.
Barb was a fierce feminist, advocating for women's rights throughout her life. Her efforts in this area, particularly through her work with the YWCA, were recognized in the book "More Strong Minded Women."
Barb was known for her zest for life and diverse interests. She was an avid traveler who shared her love for exploration with family, taking her son and granddaughter on memorable trips to the United Kingdom. She also visited Sofia, Bulgaria as part of her work for the Iowa Council. An arts enthusiast, Barb enjoyed various cultural experiences, including attending Bob Dylan concerts at CY Stephens in Ames.
Barb's love extended beyond blood relations. She once said to her daughter-in-law: "No more 'in law,' you're just my daughter, you're one of mine."
Barbara Bailes Mathias will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, commitment to community service, feminist advocacy, and the love she shared with her family and friends. Her impact on the lives of those she touched will continue to resonate for years to come.
