Antonia Corio Smid, 35, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on October 28, 2025. Born on July 31, 1990, in Des Moines, Antonia was the beloved daughter of Ken Smid and Angela Corio; and a cherished sister to Ian Smid and his wife, Stephanie; she loved her "in-town grandparents," George and Linda Durban; and her long-time partner, Frank Amodeo.
She attended both Iowa State University and Grand View College. Antonia pursued her career at Welmark helping senior federal workers navigate their health insurance-an effort that reflected her dedication to helping others. Those who knew her best will remember that giving was not just something she did; it was who she was. Holidays, birthdays, or any ordinary day, Antonia was known for arriving with two cards rather than one, balloons with curly ribbons, and gifts that often arrived in delightful succession-because "the first one wasn't enough and/or she misplaced the one she bought first." On her mother's 60th birthday, she appeared with 60 helium balloons, a testament to her creativity and playfulness.
A great evening was a meal of pasta with Grazianos sausage and a game of Rummikub or Farkle.
Antonia's heart was vast. She adored her nieces, Lucy and Sawyer, and took every opportunity to make them feel special. She loved the state fair, summer beach time, live music and dining out with family and friends. A loyal New York Yankees fan-though she never shied from catching a Cubs game-Antonia brought liveliness and laughter wherever she went.
Civically engaged and thoughtful, she stayed informed about the world around her and cared deeply about its direction, always making her voice heard at the ballot box.
Antonia's giving nature, humor, and warmth will continue to fill the lives of those she touched. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15th from 1 - 5pm (brief program at 2), at the Iowa Cubs Club in Principal Park, 1 Line Dr, Des Moines, IA 50309. Donations in her name can be made to the Legacy Woods Nature Sanctuary.org. You may wear something from your favorite baseball team or wear something navy and white as a nod to the Yankees. Join Antonia for a loving seventh inning stretch.
