Ada Mae Nichols

May 8, 1938 — May 25, 2023

Ada Mae Nichols was born on May 8, 1938, in Triplett Town, Mississippi to Will and Essie (Brewer) Triplett.  She went home to be with her heavenly Father on May 25th, 2023.

She accepted the Lord at an early age and was always active with the churches she attended. She loved bringing all things back to God and teaching people how to relate to God on a personal level.

The family moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1944.

Ada went to North High School and graduated in 1957. She attended Corinthian Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and later became a member on the financial board.  She began working at Northwestern Bell straight out of high school and worked there for 35 years, even through the government break up of the company in 1984.  She was also a part of the Iowa Club of Des Moines, otherwise known as DCI and Iowa Days.

She met Arthur Melvin Nichols, who was attending Drake University and married him on January 10th, 1965 in Des Moines, then moved to Washington DC shortly after that. They had one child, Jeffrey Nichols, born January 01, 1967.  They divorced in 1972.

Ada attended Southern Friendship Baptist Church where she also worked as a secretary from 1992 to 2005 after retiring from the phone company on December 15, 1991. She was a member of the choir and gave announcements with a booming voice that caught everyone's attention when she began which was such a surprise to everyone because she was so soft-spoken the rest of the time.

She loved dancing, singing, and praising God! And if you knew her, you know she COULD DRESS so shopping (but only at the best places - Macy's, Hecht's, Younkers) was a big favorite as well as hanging out with her girlfriends. She loved to travel and would go anywhere that Iowa Days was going!  Ada was a great cook and an even better baker.  She had the best German chocolate cake and pecan pie. She liked watching all sports, but especially loved tennis!

Ada leaves behind to cherish her memory loving son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Calista Nichols; grandson, Jayden Nichols, and a whole host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from Washington DC to Iowa and everywhere in between.

She was preceded in her homegoing by her mother, Essie (Brewer) Triplett; father, Will Triplett; her brothers Pete, Doug and Arthur Triplett, her sisters Edna Roberson, and Mary Alice Triplett; nieces Carla and Dyann Triplett.

Memorial service for Ada will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at New City Church in Des Moines.
